The water isn’t the only restorative element of the Mermaid Star Motel Pool Area. Take a moment to rest and recline and take in this art-packed zone. The Motel is very proud of its spring fed pool, filled with the same restorative water it offers guests at the front desk. There is even complimentary restorative water shower to rinse off before you swim. Look up: the pool itself is suspended above you.

- Look up. The pool is suspended in the air.
- The hedge wall is watching you. Look for the sharks and the eyes of local animals peering out from the greenery.
- Can you identify the various species in Beck Conrad's Wall of Eyes?
- The mermaid tail is a shout out to the sand festival.
- Look for the same photo of the Florida panther here, in the Wildlife Corridor, in the can and in the Arena. Nothing at FloridaRAMA is random.
- The Mermaid Star constellation is out behind the motel, and the lights above the pathway spell out a person saying L-O-L.
- Look for the fireworks on the wall, a celebration frozen in time.
- Peer into the Flora-Da-Scope from both ends. The details inside contain local sea life, and the Miami neon color surrounds you.
- Keep an eye out for the many native Florida birds hanging around the pool.
🌴 Florida & FloridaRAMA Facts
- The word motel comes from combining motor and hotel. It was coined in the United States in the early 1920s as car travel became widespread.
- Florida's roadside motels emerged in the 1920s and 30s as tourists began driving long distances into the state. By the 1940s and 50s the classic format took hold: single story layouts, parking at the door, neon signs and small swimming pools. The Mermaid Star Motel is built in that tradition.
- Florida is the only state where mermaid has appeared as an official job title on the state payroll, thanks to the underwater shows at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, which started in 1947.
- The L-O-L constellation is a nod to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, Florida's first dark sky park.
