Ballet of the Final Anthozoans is an immersive installation created by “OVERGROWN” comprised of Adam Hutz, Barrak Darweesh, KJ Wu and Tina Piracci that choreographs the wondrous phenomenon of coral spawning. With the backbone of our ecosystem in decline with humans to blame, these Final Anthozoans find themselves flipped upside down in a world of imbalance. Due to global warming, pollution and other human-created catastrophes, coral spawning is becoming less and less successful, adding to the cumulative decline of our coral reefs. Ballet of the Final Anthozoans acts as both a tribute and a warning: we must protect these delicate environments, or else bear witness to their last dance. The egg within coral spawning alludes to cyclicality, a common theme in OVERGROWN’s work. Upon viewing, the participant is faced with an alluring space that plays with depth and perception to lend an expansive underwater atmosphere.
Bio—
Tina Piracci obtained her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from USF with a concentration in sculpture and extended media. She also studied abroad at Cite Universitaire in Paris and University College London, which encouraged her to explore a graduate degree outside of Florida. She is currently a M.S. in Architecture candidate at UC, Berkeley with an emphasis in technology & sustainability. Tina resides in Berkeley where she serves as a research affiliate at the Berkeley National Lab while balancing coursework, teaching and art practice. Her current research is within clay 3D printing and its various artistic and utilitarian applications. Each project is an experiment as she strives to merge art with technology. She often pulls inspiration from the natural world as she believes nature is the ultimate design. With its patterns echoing through various scales, nature is the one thing that balances beauty and function effortlessly. She believes technology can help solve world problems by harnessing the natural elements of the world, such as clay and natural materials.
